| MALACCA |
Under Sultan Mansur Shah (1456-1477), Malacca's fame and wealth does not last long after getting attention from the expansionist Europeans with the Portuguese becoming the first to arrive and eventually going on to conquer Malacca land. All the activities were led by Alfonso d'Albuquerque. The Portuguese, who arrived in 1509, were at first welcomed as trading partners, but then expelled when their designs on the country became apparent.
The Portuguese returned two years later, seized the city and try to turn the city into impregnable fortress, bristling with seventy cannon and equipped with all the latest anti-siege war technologies. However, these proved insufficient to keep out the Dutch, who starved the city into submission in 1641 after a six month siege.
When Holland was overrun by the French in the Napoleonic wars, the Dutch Prince of Orange ordered all his overseas possession to surrender to the Great Britain. After the wars ended, the British handed Malacca back to the Dutch. Shortly afterwards the British managed to regain the city back by swapping one of their Sumantran colonies for it. Apart from a brief tenure by the Japanese during WW2, the city stayed in British hand until Malaysia declared independence in 1957.
That all for now.. Salam and Thank you for reading :)
